update June 3 2019. The tumor has regrown on the MRI report. We thank your for your continued prayers as we transition to hospice care. See the update tab to the right and above for more info.
Our beloved Dawna Day was rushed to the hospital several weeks ago after she showed signs of an issue when she couldn't read sheet music in Choir practice.
She had lost many neurological capabilities and a CT showed a mass on her brain. The next morning she was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown where she received excellent care, but was told that surgical removal of the tumor was not possible.
After a biopsy at Ruby Memorial, she was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma IV (GBM), a cancerous brain tumor. This a very serious diagnosis but Dawna has hope and wants to focus only on fighting and trusting in God's amazing healing power.
Now 3 weeks after her initial hospitalization, and many doctors visits having past, she miraculously was accepted by Duke hospital's renowned Neurosurgeon, Dr. Alan Friedman. It was an awesome miracle to see this happen!
Daniel had contacted Duke inquiring about their Polio vaccine experimental study for GBM, and they called back the following evening to say they wanted her case for the resection, which we had been told was not possible! To put this perspective, this call came from the doctor recently featured on CNN as one of the leading experts on this tumor.
Not only that, if she had started Chemotherapy & Radiation as planned only a few days later, she would not have been able to get the surgery!
The prayers of our friends and family were truly heard.
Dr. Friedman was able to remove all of the tumor that was visible on the MRI scan on Nov 7, which changes the prognosis drastically. We now have a fighting chance at life and a renewed hope!
We apologize for the lack of communication up to the surgery date. All of our efforts were focused on letting Dawna sleep and rest right up to the surgery. Before the surgery she was unable to tolerate sound, light or activity.
Now we are asking for our community's help.
-Dawna still has movement needs and will need friends, and/or nurse coverage at night for quite some time and round the clock care during her initial healing.
-We are unsure at this time what parts of the treatments are covered by her insurance but are hoping for the best.
-Hotel costs, special food needs and medicines are also a new challenge that we WILL overcome.
-We would also love to have appointments with oncology nutrition specialists and pay for special supplements that would support her medical care.
If you can't give at this time we understand. Instead please pray for more drastic breakthroughs and healing. Pray for peace to cover this family. As many of you know, we have been through rough times as a family before.
It is our hope to display God's grace in "Real Time." To show that a family going through this can continue to display the love of Christ and Worship God.
Thank you all -Michael, Daniel, and families
