Team Calvin - Family Fund

Friends and Family -

Since March 24, my nephew, Calvin, and his family, of the Parkville, Mo area, have been in the PICU at Children's Mercy in downtown Kansas City. After experiencing flu-like symptoms the day before, he was taken to urgent care for further evaluation. Following a cautionary X-ray scan of Calvin’s chest, the results showed an enlarged heart and was soon thereafter transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

As doctors performed numerous tests in the PICU, the family discovered Calvin was experiencing dilated cardiomyopathy. This was an unsettling diagnosis for anyone, but especially scary for a 12-year-old boy and his family. Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle reducing the heart's ability to pump blood effectively. Cardiomyopathy can lead to irregular heart rhythms or heart failure and is the leading cause for heart transplants. Often, the exact cause of the muscle disease is never found.  The disease has a poor prognosis. 50% of patients do not make it past 2-years, and only 25% of patients survive longer than 5-years.

In Calvin’s case, doctors have acknowledged his heart is very weak and has grown to the size of a cantaloupe. He is also battling with a blood clot in his heart, approximately 4 c.m. in diameter. At this point, the family does not have many good options. Waiting lists for heart donors can exceed a year. Most alternative options sadly come with a reduced quality of life. Calvin is on the spectrum which further complicates the options available to him and his family.

At this point, we do not know how long Calvin has with us, but this unfortunate disease has already and will continue to take a large toll on the family both emotionally and financially. If you have the opportunity to contribute to #TeamCalvinMoore, it would mean the world to him and his family. As little as $10 could help support the daily needs of the family as they continue to fight this ongoing battle.

Many thanks to each and every one of you for your consideration, prayers and donations.

Much love,

#TeamCalvinMoore
