Early this fall, my good friend Kayli Bond was starting to feel a little bit of normalcy in her life for the first time again since her ten year old son Blake received a bone marrow transplant in June of 2018 due to him facing childhood cancer for a second time in his life. Having battled illness now over half of his young life; first being diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a rare cancer of the lymph nodes, when he was just 5. After bravely battling and finally ringing the cancer free bell at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario at the beginning of 2018 Kayli’s world came crashing down as her child was diagnosed with cancer a second time just two months later, this time in the form of AML or Acute Myeloid Leukemia which required Blake to receive a transplant of bone marrow from a donor match. Blake initially did remarkably well after receiving the transplant, however after a follow up appointment and numerous tests to confirm some suspicious symptoms Blake began to exhibit in late October, Kayli’s worst nightmare came true once again. Blake was indeed sick and requiring treatment again. This time, Blake was diagnosed with Graft vs Host Disease or GVHD which is an immune condition that occurs after transplant procedures when immune cells from the donor (known as graft cells) attack the recipient patient host’s tissues. GVHD affects Blakes skin and has treatment options but no known cure and can have potentially serious complications. Currently, Blake and Kayli are facing a long stint at Toronto's Sick Kids hospital for a new kind of therapy to try and subside some of Blake's symptoms. They are expecting to be spending at minimum, a good portion of the next six months living in or near the hospital in Toronto, completely focused on Blake and his health. So far, Blake's GVHD has been stubborn. The treatment plan they are about to embark upon in Toronto is their last hope on Canadian soil to get his disease under control. If this treatment is unsuccessful, he will head to Seattle for further measures, which will again have to come out of the pocket of Kayli - who is a single mom with zero outside financial support.
Blake himself, who was enjoying being back on his dirt bike over the summer is devestated to again be unable to attend fifth grade. Kayli feels helpless as she is unable to work have any fixed income to provide for her children, and as her stint back to work was so short, she does not have the hours worked to qualify for any subsequent funding. Bond’s 12 hear old daughter Haileigh continues to stay with Bond’s sister Taryn or mother Lisa and attends school at Sacred Heart, all while dealing with her brother being sick and her mother being absent in her need to care for his health.
This is why the Bond family has had to turn to the community again for support.
There is a hockey game and dance being planned for March 7th to help support Blake and Kayli on this journey once again. Please contact Sarah Ball for more info.
In the meantime, we have set a goal of $5000 for this GoFundMe in hopes of this amazing community coming together again for Blake and his mom. Kayli is the most kind, giving amazing person and she is doing this all on her own. Please share if you can't afford to donate. Every little bit helps.
