On Valentine’s Day 2016, Bernadette Espiritu, our wonderful Charge Nurse on PCSU, was working when she developed neurological symptoms; sadly she suffered a debilitating stroke leaving her with significant deficits.
Following aggressive treatment Bernadette is now recovering slowly but her needs are substantial and she will require an extended period of therapy and rehabilitation.
In addition to the many challenges that Bernadette faces as she rehabilitates and recovers from her neuro deficits, Bernadette and her husband, Jet, also have very challenging and demanding needs at home.
They have two sons, aged 19 & 26 years old, and a daughter, Josette, who is now 21 months old. Sadly Josette was diagnosed with the life limiting condition, SMA (Type 1) and she is very fragile.
Josette requires constant care and has been having increasing episodes of desaturation requiring ventilatory support and occasionally resuscitation. They do not have any caregivers; Josette is fully dependent on Bernadette and Jet, as they are the only ones able to manage her very delicate respiratory state.
They constantly battle to juggle work with their own family needs. They never ask for assistance and quietly battle on courageously supporting both their children and one another- but Bernadette’s stroke has been a terrible blow to an already overburdened family.
Both Bernie and Jet are RN’s at Mission Hospital. Bernie for an outstanding 16 years, and Jet, an amazing 11 years, as a Mission Float Pool nurse. They are both much loved and highly respected nurses and very much a part of the Mission Hospital family. The offers for help and support have been heart-warming, so we hope this will be a way for us to assist them.
We are raising funds to help support Bernadette and her family through this very difficult and challenging time. Their needs were already staggering and her stroke has just increased the burden and complexity of life upon them exponentially.
We are humbly asking for you to consider making a donation to her fund and request that you continue to hold them in your heart and prayers.
