You may have come in contact with Ben Pino and his wife, Shelly, if you have kids involved in sports in Santa Fe. We are reaching out on their behalf, with the hope of helping them raise the funds to fight against Ben’s recent diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer.

Ben has volunteered the last 15 years as a coach for Santa Fe little league and Santa Fe’s local YAFL, as well as, baseball and football at Capital High School.  Ben has worked in the hotel industry the last 24 years, but due to a recent change in position, he is not eligible for sick or PTO at this time.  Ben’s wife, Shelly, has worked the past 18 years as a nurse caring for other family’s loved ones.

In late February, Ben was taken to the emergency room for an unexplained weight loss and extreme fatigue with no significant finding. Approximately a week later, he returned to the emergency room where multiple diagnostic tests and scans led to an admission and diagnosis of colon cancer.  

Additional diagnostic testing was run at the cancer center to determine the extent of the cancer and if it had spread, followed by another hospital admission for dehydration and complications of diabetes.  Ben has started what will be multiple rounds of chemotherapy before an anticipated surgery once the chemo has had a chance to stop the spread and reducing the primary tumor in the colon.
