On November 1st, 2018 at 10:34 pm, my brother, August Michael Golabek was riding his bike on they way back from 7-11 in Sarasota, FL. He was at the intersection of Nassau and Swift while crossing the street he was struck at full speed by a white, Ford F-150 pick up truck, who stopped and then took off.

He was immediatly transferred to the ICU and spent several weeks there figting for his life in a medically induced coma. The entire right side of his body was injured, all of his ribs were broken, his lungs collapsed and were filling up with fluid and he was not oxgenating which required several surgeires to get him breathing on his own again. He was also suffering from Inter cranial pressure which has now been resolved. He is recovering from his trach and beginning to eat chewable foods, but is still on a feeding tube. August still cannot walk on his own or do the majority of tasks that we take for granted on a daily basis like feeding ourselves and being able to independently go to the bathroom.

He has sustained what is called a Tramatic Brain Injury and we finally have a diagnosis as to the extent of damage from this accident. Keep in mind, August has no idea how this happened to him and may never remember, as this is how the brain heals.

August has a severe concusional injury and has also suffered damage to his intercranial frontal lobe which affects making new memories, short and long term memory among many other things. He is also suffering from retrograde amnesia, demential delirium and visual hallucinations. Due to the high impact of the brain injury, his head was tossed forward, backward and then forward again with the impact of the vehicle. He has suffered severe damage to his right eye and may not ever regain vision or be able to open it. This is also impacting his mobility and peripheral vision.

We will not know for 6 months the full state that August will recover too for the rest of his life. He may not ever fully recover, but with his age and his "fire cracker" personality, along with physical, cognitive, concussion and vision therapy, the support and love of his family and friends, August could make a strong recovery.

Currently, we need some help with medical, transportation costs to help get him across the state and for me to stay with him since we are both Detroit, Michigan natives. We also need help for items he will need at the rehab, such as shoes, clothing, and items such as books, games, movies to keep him occupied, comfortable and continuing to make connections in his brain.

This top Brain Injury and Pain Management rehabilitation facilty is hours away from his home and he will need to be medically transported. We are trying to make sure that August is comfortable so he can have the best chance at a full recovery.

This is has been a life changing event for not only August, but his family and friends. Several doctors and nurses have expressed to me there is NO way that August should be alive. We are grateful that he has made such a positive recovery thus far, but we have a long road ahead of us.

Please help support August in his recovery from this horrific accident. If you cannot make a donation, your prayers, love, support and sharing the post in hopes that we can help find this hit and run driver is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone whom has reached out to check on August. It means more than you will ever know.
