It has been a very difficult decision to start a GoFundMe campaign for myself. I like being independent and so asking for help is excruciatingly difficult. But due to my crazy illness, my life is on the line and that beats out my pride.
Here’s my story...
I have have the great blessing of being able to teach school for the past 24 years. During that time my life has taken some very interesting twists and turns and teaching school has been the constant. Over that time I have raised 6 children, gained 11 grandchildren, been married and divorced twice, homeschooled, taught in a private school, lived in 5 states, taught in grades K - 9 in both upper middle class situations and in very lower socioeconomic schools. As I said, the one thing that I could always count on besides faith and family, was teaching school.
I moved to Raleigh, NC about 18 months ago to be near family and was looking forward to the dust finally settling. My crazy vagabond years were over at long last and I was looking forward teaching second grade this fall (my favorite) at a great school...never to change again. Life could finally be calm and peaceful!
Then on July 5th a bomb was dropped. I was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, am extremely rare cancer. Things have changed to say the least!
PURPOSE OF MY CAMPAIGN:
Due to being new to this school district, I only have a few sick days accumulated. With all the doctors appointments and treatments I have, those will be used up very quickly. I will then pay out of pocket for any time off and this will quickly prove to be a financial hardship. I will also need to have major surgery, most likely at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. This will require me to be out of school for 6 - 8 weeks.
