Teacher Training Workshop in Haiti

For over 20 years, Ecole Saint Georges de Fleurenceau located in Saint Marc, Haiti, has endeavored to meet the challenges of the country’s educational needs by developing adequate curriculum and conducting workshops designed to bolster teachers' knowledge and pedagogical skills.

The challenges facing Haiti in educating its citizens become even more acute when we consider that few Haitian teachers have the opportunity to enroll in university or college level programs and that quality teacher training programs are scarce. In fact, only 22% of Haitian primary school teachers have completed any kind of pedagogical training - which naturally affects the quality of education available to Haitian children as well as the country’s economic growth and social progress.

In response to this dire situation and to help in teacher preparedness, the Directorate of Ecole Saint Georges is planning a 5-day workshop for 25 teachers, that will focus on utilizing the internet . Teachers will learn how to use the internet to improve their core knowledge, search for pedagogical resources, and learn how to incorporate them in their lesson plans to enhance their teaching.

We are seeking contributions to support the following: purchase of instructional materials, paper, printer cartridges, lunches and gas for the generator (essential in a country where blackouts are frequent ). Additionally we plan on providing a modest stipend to participants who, like most teachers in Haiti, are paid 10 months out of the year (receiving less than $200 per month on average) and are unlikely to find any source of income during the summer months.
