I am so proud to say it is my 11th year at Locke High School, an urban inner-city school, where there are 60% Latino and 40% African-American students. Locke High School is located in Watts, an area where the average family of 4 makes about 17,000 a year and 97% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. In spite of the everyday challenges our families are faced with, we have increased our college acceptance rates from 3% to 75%. It's exciting to share with you that in my tenure the graduation rates have quadrupled and I am proud of the work we are doing in Watts. I'm reaching out to you because I would like to take my teachers on a special retreat this year. As you can imagine, our school budget doesn't set aside "appreciation" funds for the real heroes at Locke High School…The Teachers!
When I look at all the accolades of our school I have to think about the heroes behind the success, yes, our students work hard every day but the true magic happens as a result my dedicated and selfless teachers. These teachers wake up every morning and come to school on time, greet our student’s with smiles, love and nurture them, and give them a rigorous education every day. It is my hope that you will help me in this endeavor to treat my teachers like kings and queens for an overnight retreat. These teachers with their tenacity, passion and positive attitudes make my school a success.
So today I come to you to ask for some love for my school, love that will help my teachers push through the year and continue to do the great work as they have done so for the past 10 years. Honestly, any little bit will help! In turn I will send you a small token of my appreciation. These teachers are our student's champions…and I am my teachers'Champion. Please help me to recognize these very important people who make a student's life a little bit better each day.
