Téa went through an awake craniotomy August 10th, 2022; awake enough to respond for assessment during the operation, but under enough anesthesia to not be in pain. The tumour being in the left hemisphere of the brain, responsible for language and speech, doctors tried to preserve as much function as possible. Thankfully, the surgery was a success. Unfortunately, this cancer is not curable- only treatable. After biopsies and tests, the cancer was identified as high-grade glioblastoma (GBM) that has a rare mutation that is associated with aggressive cellular reproduction and recurring growth, which proved itself true in 2023 with regrowth. Téa underwent 30 days of radiation and continues to undergo chemotherapy. The options for Téa’s treatment are limited due to funding and availability in Canada and uncertainty of its ability to work due to the mutations.
Before this, Téa completed the Primary Care Paramedic program at JIBC, and was going through the hiring processes with BC Ambulance. The initial diagnosis of abnormal tissue in the brain was July, during the program, however Téa completed the program and 10 days later was in the operating room. Caring for others and making a difference in someones’ day is what she wanted. Unfortunately due to the effects of treatment, Téa was and is unable to attend training despite being hired. Yet still, her passion for nature, life, and her loved ones are strong. We want to help her complete her bucket list, explore more adventures, and support her.
