Helping Hanna
In June of 2021, Ann Grills and Mika Laitila of Peterborough Ontario, received devastating and life altering news. Hanna, their bright, beautiful and happy little 4-year-old daughter, was diagnosed with a brain cancer known as Astroblastoma. This was discovered after a month's long bout of headaches and vomiting.
Hanna immediately underwent surgery for tumor resection at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Astroblastoma is an incredibly rare cancer (Sick Kids has seen 3 cases in the past 20 years), and unpredictable. Without further treatment in the form of radiation therapy, Hanna faces a high risk of recurrence.
Hanna requires a specific form of radiation technology called Proton Therapy to control her tumor, and to give her the best chance to minimize side effects caused by radiation on a young developing brain. Proton Therapy for cancer is not available in Canada, but it is available at specialized centres in the United States. Hanna has been accepted to receive treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and is beginning her journey the week of August 16, 2021.
Hanna's parents, Ann and Mika have applied to the Ontario Ministry of Health for financial coverage of medical costs associated with treatment, however there will still be substantial expenses related to travel, food, and shelter. Hanna and Ann are expected to be in the United States for approximately 8-9 weeks, and Mika will also be travelling south at various intervals. Hanna's grandmother will be accompanying Ann and Hanna to provide relief as needed.
The funds raised will be used towards all uninsured costs that arise during Hanna's journey. There will be travel, living expenses, medications, and entertainment to keep Hanna's spirits up while she is away from her father and two siblings, Tommi and Maia. This will also cover the unforeseen expenses that arise during this tumultuous journey over the next few months of treatments, and years of follow up appointments to come.
The family realizes these are hard times for most, and if a monetary donation is not possible, they are asking for well wishes and prayers "for the best possible outcome".
