Leitrim Animal Welfare is the only rescue in our county.

When an animal is abandoned, neglected, injured, or left with nowhere to go in Leitrim, we are it. There is no backup rescue down the road. There is no overflow facility.

And we don’t get to choose only the easy cases.

We don’t cherry pick the young, healthy, straightforward animals. We take the frightened ones. The medical cases. The abandoned litters. The dogs who need time. The cats who need treatment.

Because when you are the frontline, you don’t get to look away.

In 2025, with your support, we made enormous improvements to the standard of care we provide.

✨ We created a brand new cattery, giving vulnerable cats a calm, secure space to heal and thrive.

✨ We fully refurbished our dog kennels, improving comfort, hygiene, and welfare standards.

✨ We created a dedicated veterinary room on our premises.

Our on site vet room has been transformative. It means far fewer stressful travel visits for our animals ❌ and allows our in house vet to truly get to know our dogs and monitor their progress closely. That consistency of care makes a real difference, especially for nervous or long-term residents.

And now in early 2026, we have begun clearing land that belongs to Leitrim Animal Welfare, groundwork that will allow us to expand carefully and responsibly in the future.

But here is the honest reality.

All of this is incredibly costly for a charity that already carries so much responsibility for our community.

Every day we cover food, heating, electricity, cleaning supplies, and rising veterinary bills.

We fully fund our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programme, covering 100% of the cost, including neutering, parasite treatment, and FIV/FELV testing, because prevention is critical to reducing suffering across Leitrim.

We do not turn away difficult cases because they are expensive.

But responsible rescue means we cannot commit to more animals than we can safely afford to care for. If we stretch beyond our means, the animals already in our care would suffer and that is something we will never allow.

Being the only rescue in the county is an honour.

But it is also a huge responsibility. ❤️
