Marigold the Rescue Horse

Donation protected
This is Marigold; a year ago we rescued her from the sale yards. It was her fifth birthday. Nobody but the doggers were bidding on her, so we took a chance on her and brought her up to QLD to start a new life and help her find a loving new family.

I'm Alice, I have ridden and owned horses all my life and caring for them has been one of my greatest passions. Over the past several years I have been running a small rescue group, Little Hooves Rescue, focusing on rehabilitating horses, so that they can find their forever homes. All of these horses have been rescued from saleyards and abattoirs, where they otherwise would have been processed for meat. To date, this is the first time I have asked for public donations.

Marigold has always been a joy to know, but due to her past has suffered from numerous ailments from as long as we've known her. From day one her health proved to be a problem; she developed stress colic due to the stress and trauma of the sales yards, delaying her departure. Having caught it in the early stages, she recovered quickly, and we soon had a sweet new addition to our rescue family.

On arrival she seemed fairly healthy (apart from being underweight and a few lumps and bumps) so we were optimistic; she was very sweet to work with, on the ground and under saddle, and we thought it wouldn’t take long to find her forever home.

Then, a few months after her arrival, one of her legs swelled up and a huge abscess burst at the top of her hoof. Despite the abscess healing due to our best care and numerous vet visits, Marigold still suffers lameness (as well as mysterious swellings that appear and disappear over her body, trauma from her racing days, and a parrot mouth), leading us to believe that further investigation and treatment is necessary.

Before being able to do more than get a quote for the X-rays, Marigold became very sick very quickly - going downhill overnight, requiring vet visits every few hours to administer pain relief, paraffin, litres of fluid, but showing little sign of improvement.

After a stressful night, she was hospitalised so she could have constant care, fluids, and pain relief.

Marigold spent 5 days at the surgery receiving the best treatment, and ensuring that she was well enough to return home. Unfortunately, the inevitable cost that came with this care has hit us hard. Her bill was sent out today, which came to $3166.70, a large amount to pay off for a full time university student and part time worker (but will be paid off regardless of this gofundme, one way or another).

Having a small horse rescue this cost was not completely unexpected, but will be a stress to pay off while keeping on top of feed bills, hoof trims, dentist bills and any further treatment Marigold might need - all of which I fund personally.

I’ve had a lot of people tell me that "there is a reason why these horses are at the sales" (which is a valid point in many cases), but this is a (now) 6 year old horse with her whole life ahead of her, I'd love to be able to keep giving her a chance at a home were she can be active and be in a partnership with someone, especially since she has many admirers as everyone who meets her loves her, not just sit her life out in a paddock. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated and would make a huge impact to this horses life.
