こんにちは (Hello) Everyone,
My name is Tazia Miah. I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan -- Ann Arbor majoring in International Studies with a concentration in Global Environment and Health and minoring in Asian Languages and Cultures through Japanese. My dream has always been to study abroad in Japan, and I have been fortunate to have an opportunity to do so this summer. I will In Shaa Allah be studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan for a month this upcoming summer semester. There I will be taking classes that delve into Japanese society and culture, participating in a variety of culturally immersive activities and site visits, and practicing the Japanese I have learned over the past two years.
Not only will these courses help me complete my major and minor, but as I pursue Public Health and Medicine, it reiterates my goal to try expand my understanding of others who are not just in my immediate vicinity in order to be able to help and communicate with people who I originally might not have been able to before.
The only downside to being pre-med and an International Studies major with Japanese is that the U of M funded Japanese study abroad programs conflict with my regular classes. Fortunately, a week and a half ago I have been accepted to the Japanese Summer Studies study abroad program through CIEE! With this being a non U of M program though, this means it is very limitedly funded by U of M.
Tokyo itself is a costly city to travel to and live in, making study abroad programs there more than others. The breakdown of the cost of the Japanese Summer Studies is the following:
Tuition & Fees: $5088 & $967
Room & Board: $2295 & $800
Books & Supplies: $100
Transportation: $1800
Personal Expenses: $900
I have been fortunate that during the regular academic year U of M has provided me ample financial support due to my family’s income status ( my mom being the only one who works full time so my little sister and I can attend our universities). Unfortunately these scholarships don’t apply if I take summer courses, especially at a non U of M sponsored study abroad program. I have applied for scholarships and loans, but will not be notified about them until mid April or right before my first deadline, putting me in a limbo. Subtracting the cost that I have already begun to pay and any scholarships/loans that I may receive, Half of the cost of the program is due April 14th, then one fourth in June, and the remaining fourth in July.
I have saved money from my jobs this year and will continue working this spring and next fall, but I would very much appreciate any support I can receive. If you are able to donate, whether big or small, I am sincerely grateful for your generosity. If you are unable to donate, spreading the word by sharing this page would greatly help as well. Regardless, I appreciate you taking the time to read this!
I hope to share my journey to Japan with you all soon!
ありがとうございます。(Thank you!)
