On November 7th, at 2:00 am, I had my first tonic-clonic seizure. I was referred to get an MRI with contrast, which showed a substantial right frontal parasagittal meningioma that will require removal through a craniotomy.

There are good things:
  • This is a slow-growing and typically benign brain tumor. It is operable, and I have a great neurosurgeon, Dr. Javier Dupuy, who will take great care of me. The seizure medicine I am on is keeping those at bay until we can perform the procedure.
  • This is a lot to process, but Luis is my deep inhale in and my long exhale out. My family and his have made me feel supported and brave.
  • Among other things, frontal parasagittal meningiomas can cause seizures, blurred vision, headaches, memory loss, focus issues, and depression. Those times when I am a total space cadet, looking off in a blank stare to the right until I can gain control and return to reality, are small frontal lobe seizures I have multiple times a day. The tumor has been growing and causing symptoms in me for many years. Though some of my quirks are here to stay and have nothing to do with the tumor, I have great hope that many of its inhibitive symptoms are on their way out.

The difficult things:
  • With my being in Belize, I opted for a highly rated international health insurance (IMGlobal). I was so proud of myself and relieved to know I wouldn't put myself or my family in financial jeopardy just because my insurance didn't reach here. My anxiety of having a heart attack, stroke, or aneurysm lessened, but my pride washed away when IMGlobal told me most any tumor is considered a pre-existing condition—especially a slow-growing meningioma—whether I knew about it or not. They will not cover a cent related to anything that existed before my plan began.
  • My Achilles' heel is my wanting to be responsible and independent. I have saved and saved all of my life. The medical bills are much more than we'd expected, so I need to humble myself and also ask for help.

Please don't think any dollar, thought, or prayer is too small.

All proceeds will go towards medical expenses. I will also update the GoFundMe to reflect any outside contributions so there is transparency in seeing how close we are to our goal.

We will be providing updates on my medical journey here, as well.

As I am able to do so, I will want to express my deepest gratitude. I may be going through a foggy time for a while, but I know it will be clear again, and I will not let any gift go unnoticed. Thank you for considering my situation and your encouragement as I enter this challenging chapter. Please keep my family, Luis, Zoey, and Rowan in your hearts, as well. I am grateful for all of your support.
