For years, my friends, it has been my dream to have my very own dance company. The timing is never right, right? There was always a reason to delay. Until one day there wasn't. And that day is today. "I'll start tomorrow" is finally here and I haven't been this excited about a project in...well, maybe ever! And I'm not too proud to ask for help because my passion for dance is greater than my pride. And that's where you all come in, if you can.
I'm finding out that there are tons of aspects to consider when putting together my own company. Once I get my dancers and form the company, the next step will be to put together a show. I can easily handle all the creative aspects! But in order to put on a show, you have to rent a performance space, rehearsal space, book a lighting designer, a photographer and videographer, costume budget, and, of course, pay the beautiful dancers for their talents and hard work. All of that requires funds.
I haven't decided yet whether I want to do this here in NYC or to set up shop in the Washington, DC area. As of now, I am leaning toward DC. My immediate family is there and I am very close with them, and the thought of being much closer to them, being able to spend good quality time with them and help my parents out whenever I can is very appealing to me. I also work closely with several dance studios in the DC area, and this would allow me to continue working with those students much more readily (without the tiring travel to and from NY). I love working with children and teens. Having the privilege of transfering knowledge to young, eager minds and bodies has been a blessing. I am ready, however, to branch out and start working with adult dancers as well. This dance company will allow me to do that and it will open up a whole other realm of creative possibilities!
I would like to begin piecing this project together over the summer so I'm aiming to fundriase for about 4 months. It's a big number I realize. I always tell the kids I teach to reach beyond their own fingertips in order to connect with others while they dance. I am hoping to follow my own advice with this campaign; to reach further than my grasp so that I may find the financial support to form this dream company and connect with my future dancers and audience members in ways I've always dreamed.
Thank you from every part of my heart for taking the time to read. I may not be changing the world, but I'd like to think that once I form my company, I will make a positive impact on my artists and our viewers. Dance helps. It heals. And if I am able to connect with even one human, then this will all be worth it.
