Taylor's steely determination: 777 challenge

A pledge from an 11-year-old boy to give back to his local school.

Taylor has been a pupil at Holden Clough since joining back in Year 1. Now in Year 6, and very nearly about to bid the school farewell for high school, Taylor has decided he wants to give back to the school, which he states in his own words has "given him a second chance".

He plans to do this by undertaking a seven-day sponsored challenge whereby he will swim a mile, cycle a mile and then finally walk a mile every day for seven days. Taylor plans to do this over the Easter holidays with all money raised going towards improving playground equipment/facilities at the school - a cause dear to Taylor's heart. More of Taylor's journey are detailed below, but if you can, please give generously; we can't stress enough what this school has done for our son.

I haven't always attended Holden Clough. I originally attended a different school in the area where I live. Unfortunately, they didn't understand me at this school and told me I was a naughty boy. I attended this school from Nursery until Year 1. I was then removed from this school and placed at Holden Clough. I remember being scared, worried and shy when I started this school. Would the same thing happen to me again? Would they accept me for who I am or try to change me? I knew I was different to other children. I see things differently; I am very black and white, which can appear rude. I didn't have to worry, everyone made me feel welcome. The teachers understood me and didn't try to change me. Instead they worked with me to try and get the best out of me. They were kind, caring, understanding, compassionate.

In 2019 I was diagnosed with high functioning autism - ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder). This explained a lot to me and my family. Every day can be a challenge for me. Anything from my clothes feeling itchy or uncomfortable, disgusting smells, loud noises, a change in my timetable without any warning; routine is important, this is to name only a few.

I am going to challenge myself by doing a 1 mile swim, 1 mile bike and 1 mile walk for seven days.

Thank you Holden Clough for believing in me and giving me a great start in my education.
