Taylor's Spinal Cord Injury Fund: Home for Christmas

Donation protected
My name is Taylor Nickle. I'm a 32-year-old single mother/student. I'm recovering from a spinal cord injury. I haven't worked since early September.

I had broken multiple discs in my neck and didn't know it. On Labor Day, my left arm went numb. I got to the ER as fast as I could and lost the ability to move my left leg. After an MRI, the damage was discovered. My spinal cord was being sawed into by a rogue disc fragment. I had emergency surgery and went through two rehabilitation hospitals to try to regain my ability to walk and use my left hand. I came out at the end of October, still relying on a walker. Recently, my doctor has come to believe that there could be more spinal cord damage in a region lower than my cervical spine because the nerves themselves are working in my legs.

Up to this point, my family had carried my expenses and assistance. Unfortunately, the barrel is running dry, and the stress my injury is putting on everyone else is unfair. Plus I promised my son that we would be home for Christmas.

I've applied for disability, but the wait for approval can take months. I fall in a grey area where I'm too able in terms of self-care that I can't get help at home with cooking, cleaning, etc., covered by my insurance. But I want to go home very badly. I can drive again now that my neck brace is off, which is helpful. I still have appointments galore between PT, imaging, neurology, and my primary. It's a small fortune in fuel driving to Williamsport, Lafayette, Crawfordsville, and Indy so often. I want to walk again, but I need assistance.

I need help financially. My bills usually run about $1,000 a month. I might have to hire someone to come a few nights a week to help maintain my home and get groceries. If I'm looking at another spinal surgery, I could be looking at another 3 months of recovery time at least.

Now I know it's the holidays, and please don't neglect your own needs or your families. But whatever you can spare, I am unbelievably grateful for. I want to believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel. This has been the hardest battle in my life.
