Supporting Taylor's Journey to Recovery

Dear friends, family, and compassionate supporters,

We are reaching out during an unimaginable time of crisis and heartbreak for our family. Our beloved 16-year-old daughter, Taylor, was involved in a devastating accident the evening of September 20th. She suffered a broken back (including a T12 burst fracture) and significant spinal cord damage among other injuries. Taylor was airlifted to Reno, where she underwent emergency surgery to stabilize her spinal column, followed by a second surgery on Tuesday to remove vertebrae fragments and insert additional hardware.

As of the start of this campaign on September 26, Taylor has very little feeling or function below her waist. However, she has shown daily improvements, which gives us hope as when she was first admitted, she had no feeling or function at all. The doctors are cautiously optimistic that with extensive rehabilitation, she may eventually walk again. They described it as 'miraculous' that her spinal cord wasn't fully severed. We are deeply grateful to God for His protection over her and are trusting in His promises, power, and provision as we navigate this challenging journey.

The Road Ahead:
To give Taylor the best chance at recovery, she is being considered for transfer to a neuro-trauma specialty hospital in Denver, Colorado. The treatments and rehabilitation she will undergo are critical to her potential recovery, but the costs associated with this specialized care and the duration of the recovery ahead are overwhelming for our family. It is difficult but necessary to be transparent about the anticipated expenses to address the severity of Taylor's injuries which, in the first year alone, are upwards of $900,000.

Regardless of if she ends up recovering in Denver or Reno, we will continue to take time away from work to be by her side and learn about our new roles as caregivers throughout this long process. This leaves our family with a reduced income during an already challenging time. Additionally, the accident totaled our vehicle, and insurance coverage may not fully replace it.

How You Can Help:
Many of you have kindly reached out asking how you can help, suggesting meal trains, fundraisers and other means of supporting our family; we are humbled by the outpouring of love and concern for Taylor and our family. As we coordinate logistics responsive to the evolving situation, we gratefully accept the support we need most:

1. Prayers: Please keep Taylor and our whole family in your prayers. The journey ahead is long, and we deeply appreciate your spiritual support and prayers for Taylor's healing and for our hearts to be comforted and filled with hope.

2. Financial support: For those able and willing to help financially, we are facing significant expenses, many of which are difficult to anticipate until we encounter them. Some anticipated expenses include:
  • Medical bills and extensive, ongoing rehabilitation costs and care for Taylor
  • Potential travel, lodging, and living expenses for us to provide Taylor specialized care in Denver and/or Reno
  • Assistive devices and home modifications for Taylor to navigate eventual home care
  • Loss of income (including one income not yet qualified for FMLA)
  • A replacement vehicle for our family (we are fortunate to have extended family who have lent us a second vehicle for now)
Any contribution, regardless of size, makes a difference in helping us navigate this challenging journey and ensure Taylor receives the best possible care. We plan to provide updates and share the expenses this campaign has covered for Taylor and revise our goals as expenses arise.

3. Practical help: With our three younger children in school and activities, we know how important it is to create stability for them amid this traumatic experience. We're grateful for our loved ones who have stepped in to help, and know we cannot do this all alone and that we may need assistance with transportation, meals, respite, etc. Words cannot express our thanks for the thoughtfulness of the Venmo funds and gift cards that we quickly received to address the immediate needs, and we will gratefully accept any gifts of this nature.

Our Commitment and Gratitude:
This situation has left us heartbroken, but we are determined to do everything in our power to support Taylor as she fights through this difficult time. We are focused not only on her physical recovery but also on uplifting her spirit and supporting her overall well-being.

From the depths of our hearts, we thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support. Whether you're able to donate, share our story, or offer prayers, your compassion means the world to us. Much is still unknown, and updates are changing moment by moment. Your help will allow us to focus on what matters most—Taylor's recovery and the well-being of our entire family during this challenging time.

Thank you for your care and support of our sweet Taylor.

With heartfelt gratitude and hope,
Matt and Amanda and our family
