My name is Taylor Lookofsky and I am a 27 year old male and have type 1 Diabetes. I have been diabetic for 26 years now and I have had my ups and downs with this disease. I am now at the point in my life where I am trying to move out and become fully independent.
I am trying to raise money so I can purchase a Diabetic alert dog. The money I raise pays for everything from finding a perfect diabetic alert dog match, to delivering the DAD to my home and providing two days of in home placement and training. Diabetic Alert Dogs are trained to alert diabetic handlers in advance of low (hypoglycemia) or high (hyperglycemia) blood sugar events before they become dangerous. The Diabetic Alert Dog's early detection allows the handler to take the proper steps to return their blood sugar to a normal healthy range. By having this dog, it would allow more independence in my life and I would not be held back due to my Diabetes. My parents, and rightfully so, are concerned with me living alone due to a possible diabetic emergency happening in the middle of the night. If something were to happen in the middle of the night, this dog would wake me up if it detected I was getting too low or too high.
Most of you know I am a hard worker and I hate asking for help, but in this case, anything would help to achieve this goal. I work part time, am a full time student, and I see clients under supervision. Unfortunately, this type of care is not covered by any health insurance. It would mean so much to me to know that I always have a companion by my side, especially a companion who is there to save my life. Please help spread the word to your family and friends to help make this goal possible.
