Trumpets for Kids @ Edna Brewer Middle School

My name is Tarun Srivatsan, a junior at Mission San Jose high school in Fremont, California. Funding for music programs at public schools is rapidly declining year after year. The hardest affected programs are at the grassroots level of elementary and middle schools. One such school is the Edna Brewer Middle School located in Oakland, California. This fundraiser is focused on collecting funds for buying trumpets for Edna Brewer Middle School's music program.

Music is my passion and I have been playing instruments since I was five, including the piano and trumpet. In addition to playing in my high school band, I play in the San Jose Youth Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra and have been selected to play in the California All-State Honor Band and the California All-Northern Honor Band.

I realized early on that while I am fortunate to have access to well-funded local music programs, resources to buy instruments and access to private tutors, that is not the case for many children. Hence, I created a non-profit, called Music Thrives Foundation, to spread the joy of music to as many young children as possible and help at the grassroots level, because the hardest part of learning music is taking the first step.

I am very excited to partner with the band director, Mr. Zacahary Pitt-Smith, at the school to boost the band program. As Mr. Pitt-Smith mentions in the video, many trumpets the band uses need replacement resulting in a poor music experience for the kids.
