On April 7th, my sister will be having a prophylactic double mastectomy (DMX) surgery because she has the same BRCA1 genetic mutation that I have and that our mom had. The purpose is to reduce her risk of breast cancer from about 87% down to 2%, but it also means a major surgery and a long recovery, followed by an additional reconstruction surgery in the fall.

When I went through this surgery in 2023, the support from friends, family, and community made a huge difference during the necessary 6-week recovery period. We’re hoping to surround her with that same kind of support now.
