Remembering Tashfia Sharar (1999 - 2021)

Tashfia was a soul who put the needs and necessities of others before herself. She continuously thought of ways to make the world a better place for everyone around her. Her zeal to learn, empower and execute projects combined with the wide range of talent she possessed made her an integral part of the Bacharlorai team.

Today (October 26th) marks her birthday. Her first birthday where she is not with us anymore. She would have been 22 years old today. This fundraiser aims to celebrate her life and what she stood for. Tashfia will live on in all of us, through the everyday actions that we take and by remembering and cherishing her memory — especially through the causes she remained passionate about.

In her memory, this project will aim to bring back children who stopped continuing their education due to the various financial barriers that they face. The project will aim to help children in one of the most climate prone regions in Bangladesh, as their financial security is exacerbated because of climatic disasters.

The Problem

Although Bangladesh has achieved 100% enrolment for students in primary school, the dropout rate at high school stands at 38.3 % (Banbels, 2016). The southwestern district of Satkhira is often ravaged by climate disasters. Furthermore, 30% of the total population of this region consists of the Dalit minority population who often face religious, social, political and economic discrimination. Factors such as these work collaboratively to increase child marriage rates, affect school performance and overall influence their overall livelihoods.

What are we funding?

The project will provide monthly stipends, means of transportation and important necessities for school. This includes copies, stationeries, school bags, uniforms and shoes for 150 students. A committee will be formed with teachers and parents through which ultra-poor children will be selected and the items will be duly provided to them. Furthermore, this project will aim to build community responsibility by starting a big brother/sister initiative to encourage the need for quality education for every child regardless of their background in the community.

What are the impacts in the long run?

The project aims to help 150 underprivileged students aiming to keep them from being victims of discrimination, improve educational quality and the environment. Simultaneously, the project will decrease the school dropout rate and child marriage by supporting their education. Achieving these outcomes will help develop a sense of responsibility among the community to come forward together as one. A robust community will be built which ensures education for all, while developing the presence of mind to denounce child marriage, discrimination and discontinuing secondary education.

Every donation is another step closer to ensuring a better future for these children.
