Tantalus Trailway Signage Transit Point Signs
Donation protected
Aloha, my name is Tony Barnhill. I've been a Makiki resident for 19 years now.
I was given an Oahu trail book and started exploring these wonderful trails on and around Pu`u Ohia (Tantalus). I found the trail system to be somewhat complicated, and I set a goal to make this natural resource more accessible and safe for everyone else. I created the Tantalus Trailway map system by surveying the entire trail system. The measuring alone took almost a full year, and designing the maps another year. I released all of the maps under a Creative Commons license for free. I want everyone to enjoy this natural resource.
Through a partnership with DLNR, the first phase of the signs and maps has already been implemented. What is missing is the "You Are Here" Transit Point signs. All of the signs are already designed, and space has been left on all of the map poles to accommodate these signs. What's missing are the funds.
With your help, we can raise the remaining funds needed to manufacture these signs at a local Oahu sign shop. I will personally walk around and install these signs at all 26 transit points. These will allow you to find yourself on the map quickly and easily. And each one gives you important wayfinding information that's relative to your current position.
Each sign will look something like this. The red dots are the screw-holes. The signs will be made out of aluminum, with an anti-graffiti coating. Any additional funds will be used to help pay for the maintenance and cleaning of the signs.
Mahalo for your support. Together we can make our trails safer.
