Anybody who knows me knows how much I adore my sweet dog, Tank. Maybe you have even met him and experienced his love and affection and know how special he is. On Monday, 11/12/18, Tank went into the vet to have a lump examined. His vet expressed concern and wanted to extract cells for testing. Upon puncturing the mass, it drained completely as it was filled with blood. We were confused by this finding, but he was sent home and I was instructed to keep an eye on the location where the lump had been. By the next morning a small hematoma had appeared and my vet felt it important that I bring him back in. She ran blood panels and found that his platelets were low but could find no pathology (like certain tick borne illnesses) to explain the low platelets. In the absence of another cause, was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia, which causes the body to kill its own platelets and not clot properly. He was sent home with me on 11/13/18 with prednisone to suppress his immune system so that he could start regenerating platelets and heal. However, over the next few days he became more lethargic, less interested in eating, and began breathing rapidly and his belly became distended. I rushed him to Pima Pet Clinic, tonight, 11/17/18. Upon further testing, other clotting factors in his blood were determined to be low, and the only known causes of that are acute poisoning or genetic factors. She performed an X-ray, and found that he was bleeding internally into his chest cavity and abdomen. A plasma transfusion is being performed to hopefully save his life. So far, his bills have amounted to $1450, but potentially will cost even more in the morning when I come check on him and in the days to come. He is still young, and otherwise healthy, and I never expected such a terrifying thing to happen. We’re still not out of the woods yet.
