Amid the turbulent headlines in the news, we pause to share with you that our dear Papang Sam Tanja has passed due to serious health complications. While not connected to COVID-19, the loss of a loved one at this time has profoundly impacted our hearts and our spirit. This news, coupled with the cacophony of the coronavirus, has shaken our family, and we now prepare for what will be a bumpy road ahead.
We turn to you, our dear friends and family, for your help in any form that you can. We are holding a Tanja Family Fundraiser of $10,000 to help with the funeral costs in support of Papang Sam and his family. Your support will ease the strain to finance all necessary funeral preparations, his transportation, and the booking services of what unfortunately must be an empty funeral because of the current pandemic. We know that the California lockdown will prevent many family and friends from gathering at this time, but we will make every effort to connect with you during these trying times.
Our memories of Papang Sam are lined with countless acts of selflessness, humor, kindness, and his commitment to "no plate left behind (we know he never wasted leftover food)." Papang Sam has been our family Rock from the very beginning. His call-to-action to protect and serve his family involved a dedicated career in the U.S. Navy, among his other roles as a loving husband, father, uncle, and friend alike. He blazed our family's path to American citizenship and often went above and beyond the calling to show honor, courage, and commitment in everything he did. While we imagined a different send-off than this, please offer what you can in celebration of his life and legacy.
