Tania's Medical Fund

Tania Mercado, our co-worker and friend from the City of Pembroke Pines Purchasing Department, has not been able to work for some time due to a serious illness.

After many trips to the hospital, starting around November of 2016, for varying health issues including breathing problems, constant re-occurring back pain and numbness in her arms and hands, Tania was admitted to the hospital for a stay which doctors performed various tests.

Just recently, in the first week of February, Tania was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), which is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body.

These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and, when severe, the person is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening - potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate - and is considered a medical emergency.

No one yet knows why Guillain-Barré — which is not contagious — strikes some people and not others, or what sets it in motion.  There is also no known cure for Guillain-Barré syndrome. However, there are therapies that lessen the severity of the illness and accelerate the recovery in most patients.

Tania is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment, including being placed on a heart monitor, a ventilator and is also undergoing plasma exchange treatments.

Throughout this ordeal, Tania is trying her best to remain in good spirits, however she is disheartened because her recovery will be a slow process due to the serious nature of her illness.

We are reaching out to you today to pull on your heartstrings.  Since her illness requires her to be hospitalized, Tania has exhausted all of her available sick and vacation time.  She’s a single mom with three kids, and really needs some financial assistance during this time.  The initial goal of this gofundme page will be to cover her medical insurance costs of $6,850.  In addition, the overall goal has been set to $25,000 to cover other expenses that she will be incurring (including the expenses that her 3 young children will need to cover while she is bedridden).  Any monetary donation you can give her will be deeply appreciated and helpful.  No contribution is too small as it will help ease her burdens.

Tania is an integral part of our team and we miss her presence.  We are praying for her full recovery and that we will be able to see her bright smile and spirit come back to us soon.   Please keep her in your thoughts and help her if you can.  Have a blessed day.
