The world has lost a bright star. On Thursday, March 3rd, 2022, Tanaya Purnell, a founding member of Camden Prep High School’s Class of 2024, tragically and suddenly departed.
Tanaya was born on August 26th, 2004. She fiercely loved her mom, Gloria Culver, her siblings, Tajae, Kyre, and Tazir, and their entire extended family. Tanaya often talked about her family, and showed anyone who was around pictures of them and her pets. Tanaya took pride in helping take care of her siblings in a variety of ways, and used this experience to shape her future goals. As a Camden Prep student, Tanaya knew that she was headed to college. She aspired to pursue a degree in nursing in state. Tanaya wanted to become a nurse so that she could give back to her family and her Camden community.
At CPHS, Tanaya was a thoughtful leader. She often encouraged her peers to stay on task or refocus during class, and was always ready to share her ideas. Tanaya was a talented writer and reader. She was able to seamlessly weave well-chosen evidence into her carefully crafted arguments, and she loved our English novels so much that she read them aloud at night to her siblings. Tanaya was a beloved peer. She truly cared about her classmates and her teachers, and expressed her gratitude and love for them whenever she could. Tanaya embodied the core values of our community on a daily basis. She worked tirelessly to excel despite any obstacles in her way, earning honor roll multiple times.
Tanaya has gone entirely too soon. We are asking for donations to assist Ms. Culver in paying for Tanaya’s services, as well as additional support for her siblings, two of whom are Camden-Prep students.
