Tammy’s transformative leadership journey to Tanzania

Donation protected
Hi! I’m Tammy! Driven by an admiration for the wonder of the natural world, I followed a career in marine conservation, and I now lead the science behind BirdLife International’s Marine Programme working to safeguard our Ocean.

Science and innovation are fundamental to save life on our planet
I believe that science should be used to support decisions on how we use the Earth’s resources and to ensure that this is sustainable, but current geopolitical tensions are threatening the values that drive science and the ability to defend it. This wave of distrust is happening when the world needs it most, with drastic losses of biodiversity compounded by the climate crisis, leading to losses for nature and people.

We can do better
I want to be a better leader so I can influence decision making and ensure more sustainable use of our Ocean. Recognising this, I secured a place on Homeward Bound, a 12-month, unique leadership development program that seeks to change the current leadership model by equipping women in STEMM with the skills to lead for the greater good, to be inclusive, collaborative, legacy-minded, and trusted with assets. Skills that I can apply directly to my current role, and share with others to encourage leadership with impact and influence.

Mother nature needs her daughters
Over the last 9 months I have undertaken twice-monthly taught sessions alongside 63 other women around the world, plus 1-on-1 coaching sessions covering personal leadership diagnostics, strategic thinking and communication. So far, even though some parts have been outside of my comfort zone, it’s been a great experience, and it can only get better as the program will culminate with a once-in-a-lifetime experiential component in Tanzania, led by distinguished, global and community leaders. Tanzania will offer the opportunity to learn from community-driven solutions and different perspectives to my own. And after learning with my fellow cohort online, I’m excited to meet and build connections with a network of inspirational women committed to making an impact.

Did you know, that on average, only 29% of senior leaders are women?
The Homeward Bound leadership initiative aims to elevate women in STEMM into positions of leadership, through empowering and equipping them with the ability to influence policy and strategy so they can guide science-based action to address global challenges. Their aim is to support 10,000 women by 2036 – creating a powerful network I am excited to join.

To complete this training, I need your support!
I have self-funded the online taught component but still need cover the cost of participating in the Tanzania experience and I am looking for the support of my network to help raise this amount. Participation, including leadership learning, flights, transfers etc will total: £8,500. I appreciate that times are tough and that there are also many deserving causes for funds right now, but any support you may be able to provide will be deeply appreciated, and even sharing my page will be a big help! Thank you :)
