Tammy Martin's Breast Cancer Journey

Tammy Martin

Wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, niece, sister, friend.

Tammy and her family  have been life long resident's of Northern Aroostook County. They have been active participants in their community and wonderful neighbors.

In March of 2020 Tammy's Dr. discovered a lump in her left breast. Through tests which were inconclusive, Tammy was referred for an exploratory biopsy surgery in May of 2020. They removed a golf ball sized lump which later came back positive for cancer. One week later she underwent a second surgery to remove her lymphnode

Tammy was then referred and underwent 6 wks of radiation, through which she experienced severe swelling and skin burns.

In December of 2020 she underwent a third surgery for a deep tissue biopsy, which later came back negative for cancer.  This was due to her having severe pain and swelling, and nothing helping to subside it.

Tammy has now been diagnosed with lymphodemia in her left breast, and the swelling extends into her neck and left arm. Fluid continues to fill in the area of the removed lymphnode, and she has appointments every couple of weeks to have it drained. Tammy also continues to have PT 2x weekly with a lymphodemia therapist.

Tammy has been prescribed and needs to be fitted for a special sleeve,  this will help reduce swelling and hopefully stop the lymphodemia from spreading. These sleeves are approximately 85$ per, she essentially would need at least 2 sleeves.

Tammy may also have to under-go a fourth surgery, which is being discussed for her lymphodemia. Essentially they would take a lymphnode from another area in her body and place it in her left breast of the affected area. This has been known to be successful in other cases. She would need to travel to Portland, ME to consult with the lymphodemia specialist, and surgery would take place in Boston, MA.

Tammy and Dave are both full-time employees of MSSM in Limestone. Tammy seeks to return to her normal hours, but continues to struggle with ongoing health problems due to radiation and lymphodemia. Some weeks she is lucky if she can make it through a couple of hours before it becomes to much pain for her to endure.

As long as I have known this family, they have always been hardworking and independent. If anyone needed anything, a hot meal, whatever, they are there with open arms. It is not in their nature to ask for help, but I am asking for them.

Family, friends, community residents, or anyone who has suffered with a chronic disease. Please, let's help this family. Medical bills and expenses can be such a huge burden to bare alone.  Some financial relief could be such a huge weight lifted.

Thank you to everyone in advance
