Pham Minh Tam was the first Vietnamese graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduation, Tam returned to Vietnam in 1974 and served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He fought for his country in the final defensive action, and was incarcerated for almost 7 years. He finally was able to return to the United States in 1991 with help from the United States government and his West Point Classmates- the Pride of the Corps 1974. Tam was accompanied by his wife Chi Kim Trang. Tam and Kim became US citizens and had a daughter Kristy. Tam was proud of his family, citizenship and West Point heritage. In February of 2019, Tam was walking and struck by a car. He passed away on February 28th. Tam’s West Point classmates initiated a waiver to have his ashes placed in the Columbarium at the West Point Cemetery. Tam’s life was honored in a ceremony at West Point on June 7th, 2019. His family, friends, fellow Vietnamese veterans and West Point classmates attended as Taps noted his final resting place overlooking the mighty Hudson River. The fund will go to the family to address the significant medical costs of Tam’s treatment and support for Kim and Kristy.
