On behalf of my mother, Marta.
My mamita (grandmother), Adriana Hernandez Membreno, passed away on February 22, 2023, at the age of 89. Before immigrating to Canada, mamita survived years of war in El Salvador, going back-and-forth between seeking refuge in an Honduran camp and making the voyages back home between short intervals of calm. It was during one of these long journey's back to Honduras escaping war that she lost her life partner, my grandfather, to war. A few years later she would loose two of her sons. My mamita was lucky enough to have been government sponsored to come to Canada, and so she made her way to this new place and left everything she knew. With nothing but a small bag with some personal belongings, and her youngest son at her side, she arrived in Canada. She did not reunite with her surviving children for a few years until she was able to then move across the country and live permanently in Calgary.
My mamita dedicated her life to her children, always making sure they were taken care of and often, she’d forget to take care of herself. She was a religious woman, and her belief in God led her to live a humble and simple way of life. She didn’t believe in material things, instead she believed that a person’s character and good deeds had more value on this earth and in the afterlife.
As part of her final wishes, my mamita wanted my mother, Marta, to take her remains back home to El Salvador to be laid to rest and her other surviving children could have the closure they deserve. Unfortunately, my mother is unable to cover all the expenses as she did not work due to her physical illness and having been my mamita’s primary caregiver the last several years. These funds will help our family give my mamita her final voyage back home and cover some of the funeral costs.
My mamita is survived by her two daughters Marta and Antonia, her three sons Isabel, Henaro, and Luis, and countless grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Mamita will be sorely missed.
We thank you for the love and support we have received since her passing.
