IRONMAN for disadvantaged children in Nepal
Hi,
We are Oli and Ed, two students just about to enter Yr 13.
During the lockdown, we realised how lucky we were compared to many others worldwide.
Our school has a long partnership with the Peace Garden English School in Kokhana, a desperately poor village in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, to help with teaching and building projects, but Covid has not allowed this to happen.
The Peace Garden English School helps severely deprived and vulnerable children living in harsh environments who have not been able to receive any education. We wanted to do something to ensure this was maintained. Consequently, we want to raise funds to help the 300 students at the school and ensure their life chances are not damaged even more.
At the same time, we want to challenge ourselves, so we have decided to undertake an IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon. This is not an easy task and consists of:
- 1.9km open water swim in the Atlantic Ocean
- 90km bike ride along the west coast of Portugal, including the Estoril Formula one track
- 21.1km run
We have chosen to do this in Portugal on Saturday, 15 October, as this is the first one we are eligible to compete in, the minimum age is 18 yrs and our birthdays are just a few days beforehand. We have been training hard since January, which has been no mean feat given neither of us had ridden a road bike (we fell off a lot!!), and Ed had never swam front crawl before! We have also been aided by Simon Ward and SWAT who have helped create us personalised training programs. It has been a fantastic journey so far, and we hope to make a real impact on the lives of fellow students whilst pushing ourselves to the limit!
We appreciate your support.
Ed & Oli
