Taking my passion for pottery to the next level
Donation protected
Hi, I’m Joel Harper, an author, musician, and ceramic artist living in France. My journey with clay began in my hometown of Claremont, California, at Claremont High School.
Under the guidance of two inspiring, talented teachers, Richard Martinez and Mrs Fiddis, I first sat at a pottery (kick) wheel and experienced the magic of shaping earth with my hands. The lessons they passed on stayed with me, quietly tucked away for over thirty years, until this past year… when I touched clay again—something woke up.
Despite not having thrown a pot since high school, my teachings resurfaced. I’m now creating pieces that I could not have imagined back then. It feels like muscle memory wrapped in magic — a gift I didn’t realise was still in me.
Now, that gift is growing — not only for me but for my family. My wife and kids have been inspired to make pottery alongside me, and it’s become a beautiful, creative part of our life together.
Why I’m Asking for Help:
- Currently, I’m working out of a shared ceramics class and I’ve reached a point where I need my own kiln to continue growing and producing pottery. The dream is to set up a studio and continue sharing and teaching this passion with others.
The Goal:
- I’m raising funds to purchase a Rohde Ecotop kiln — a reliable, professional-quality ceramic kiln that will allow me to fire my work independently and expand my creativity. The total cost for the kiln and setup is €4,000.
How You Can Support:
- Thank you to everyone who has shared kind and supportive comments on my work on social media. I am excited to continue to grow my passion for making ceramics. Your support means the world to me. Whether through a donation or by sharing this campaign.
