The Taking Back November Story

On November 9th, 2004, Greg Lerch passed away after suffering complications from a highly invasive surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Since that time, the month of November has been a reminder of the loss our family experienced that day.

His passing forced me to face some hard questions: how do we handle loss? How do we deal with our hurts? How do we respond to the painful events in our lives?

In wrestling with these questions, I was comforted by the wisdom of Abraham Lincoln: “to ease another’s heartache, is to forget one’s own.” Some have called this concept "Redemptive Suffering" - taking our losses and using them to help others going through similar hurts.

In this spirit, we started Taking Back November, an annual fundraiser/event organized for the purpose of redeeming life's toughest hurts and losses by using them to help others with similarly situated needs. Our mission is to help all of us find meaning, hope, and purpose in our losses.

Each year we get together and raise money for some of our favorite local charities: New Hope For Kids, Base Camp Children's Cancer Foundation, and Make-A-Wish Central Florida.

Though Taking Back November started as something centered around my family’s darkest hour, our hope is that it will expand into something redemptive for our whole community - that each November we can all make an effort to take back our losses by using whatever events that have occurred in our lives to help others . . . and in doing so find something beautiful and redemptive.

Maybe the thing that’s hurt you the most in your life, could become your greatest tool in helping someone else.
