Tablets & Communication Devices for Students

Mrs. teaches students with disabilities who face significant challenges in communication and literacy. Many of her students are non-verbal and have low ability to express themselves, but they are making progress through interactive materials such as phonic videos and games during class. These activities have shown that, with the right tools, her students can learn to communicate their ideas and feelings more effectively.

The funds requested will specifically help by providing high-quality Android tablets, which are essential for their versatility and compatibility with specialized educational software. These tablets will serve as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, giving non-verbal students a "voice" through apps like PicTalk. This app allows students to select symbols or pictures that the tablet then speaks aloud, reducing frustration and empowering them to express daily needs and emotions. Additionally, literacy and phonics support will be provided through Reading.com, a phonics-based curriculum designed to build phonological awareness and decoding skills with interactive features like digital sound sliders.

These tools will make a real difference by bridging the communication gap for non-verbal autistic students, transitioning them from traditional paper-based methods to a more portable, customizable digital system. During small group sessions, the tablets will allow students to engage in interactive decoding and phonics awareness activities at their own pace. Research shows that tablet-based phonics instruction can significantly improve academic performance for students with developmental disabilities compared to traditional methods. The visually stimulating and game-based nature of these apps helps neurodivergent learners stay engaged, build confidence in recognizing sight words, and develop essential literacy foundations. Used daily across all subjects, these tools will help students transition from simple requests to social conversations and independent learning.

Please support this fundraiser to help our students gain the tools they need to communicate, learn, and thrive. Your generosity will make a lasting difference in their lives.
