While serving in the Special Forces in Afghanistan, my husband, Sargeant First Class Christopher Speer, and Sargeant First Class Layne Morris were involved in a firefight with Al-Qaeda.  During the firefight, Omar Khadr, a then 15-year-old Canadian citizen, threw a grenade, which exploded, and caused massive injuries which eventually killed my husband.  Layne was permanently injured from the same firefight.  

In 2013, Mr. Khadr sued Canada for $20,000,000, alleging he was wrongfully interred in Guantanamo Bay.  In 2015, the United States Federal Court in Utah entered a Judgment against Mr. Khadr on behalf of me, my children, and Layne.   The Canadian government has reportedly now agreed to issue an apology to Mr. Khadr, and on July 5, 2017, paid him CDN $10,500,000.  Without opposition, Mr. Khadr will keep his settlement, and the judgment against him will remain unpaid.     

Attorneys both in the U.S. and Canada are working hard to domesticate the judgment in Canada so the courts there can seek to enforce the judgment.  I have received many requests from both Canadian and United States citizens offering to help fund the legal expenses.  All donations received will first pay legal expenses incurred to date, then fund additional legal expenses.  Any remaining funds will go to the victims.
