Koda is a 19 year old OTTB gelding that at one point had a loving home and was owned by Shay, a 16 year old girl who cared for him dearly.
In 2013, Shay sold Koda to a woman named Lisa Dunckley who promised him a wonderful home where he would be able to live out the rest of his life in a loving environment. Several years later she would find out that this was a lie.
Lisa Dunckley was later charged with several counts of animal cruelty. Numerous horses in her care were killed and the ones that survived were left severely malnourished.
When news broke out about Lisa, Shay tried desperately to locate Koda in hopes that he was one of the surviving horses.
On November 17, 2022, Shay was alerted that Koda had been identified by his lip tattoo at a kill pen in Bowie, Texas. His slaughter date was November 24, 2022.
Shay and her friend Jamie, two 25 year old girls, were determined to bring Koda back to Sonoma County.
With the help of the community, we were able to fundraise and purchase Koda as well as his transport back to Santa Rosa, CA on November 21, 2022.
When he arrived, he was severely malnourished and in a very fragile state. It will take many months to bring Koda back to health.
Any donations received will go directly towards Koda’s extensive veterinary care and updates on Koda’s continued progress will be posted regularly.
