Friends. We’ve spent the last week celebrating the greatness of this nation and our love for it. We’ve acknowledged the sacrifices made to preserve its greatness. And I bet you will agree with me that someone who helped make it great, who sacrificed to preserve our freedom, deserves our help.
We first met Charles when we were doing a neighborhood cleanup on the outskirts of Flower Mound. In talking with his daughter, we found that their mobile home was in need of tremendous repair to make it a safe living environment. In the words of a local mobile home company, the home -- with holes in the roof and buckets beneath them to collect water when it rains, doors and windows that won’t close and floors that are rotten -- “should be condemned.” It cannot be fixed.
It is deplorable for a disabled veteran be living in such conditions – and we know you will agree.
Charles completed his United States military service as a motor pool mechanic in Korea. Upon his return home, he worked as a short haul driver for Yellow Freight but is no longer able to work due to the lasting effects of a stroke he suffered in February, 2014, that left him without the use of the left side of his body and unable to walk.
Later that year, in September, 2014, Charles lost his beloved wife, Carolyn, to complications associated with heart disease, which had plagued her for several years.
Charles is now under the care of his adult daughter, whose work options are limited both by the responsibilities she faces caring for her dad and by her own medical issues.
Charles’ limited income from social security and his pension don’t cover the cost of the mountain of medical bills he and his wife incurred before her death. His income doesn’t cover the mortgage on his dilapidated mobile home. Fortunately, Charles does own the land on which the home sits.
How can you help? We’re glad you asked. Help us cover the cost of removing this abhorrent box and replace it with a newer mobile home more suitable for a man who helped preserve your freedoms, who helped make it possible for us to enjoy the creature comforts Flower Mound living provides – comforts to which he currently doesn’t have access.
