During the frigid weather of mid-January 2024, when the night hit -28 degrees, my wife and I had to step out for work and errands. Our car hit a pothole and flattened 2 tires. We turned down a deserted side street to pull over and the car died out, pretty much in the middle of the street. We put on the hazards and hoped for help, but we weren’t able to get any help. We tried to push the vehicle, but we were very cold and struggled. I had some recent medical issues, and my legs were not strong enough to push the car. In the cold, the car battery died, and our telephone battery died. We were really stuck with no one helping us. Time was ticking by, and we were really beginning to feel the cold in our extremities. After sitting for hours, my wife got out and started knocking on doors and ringing doorbells, but no one helped. We shared a blanket. It was the scariest night of our lives. I take medication which make my feet and hands colder than what they feel like. Nearing daylight, a police car came by and stopped to find out what was going on. I was barely able to move. The officers drove us to safety and helped us to get warm. Things were dire. A few days later, we learned I had suffered 3rd degree frostbite burns and our lives were to be changed forever. I was transported to a large hospital burn unit where we learned that one of my feet would have to be fully amputated, and the other foot would have the toes amputated. This was to save my life. I have had my surgery and I'm recovering and learning to maneuver and live without my natural feet. My wife and I are together in this, but we know that I'll not be able to hold down any employment for the foreseeable future. We are depending on the generosity of family and friends to help us at this time. We are learning as we go but we know that accessible living will be most important going forward. This is our story and we ask that you consider assisting us with expenses that will not be covered by insurance and to help us obtain accessible living.
