Bring Mommy Home

Aloha,

On April 19, 2018, we lost our mother to a rare form of cancer called cholangiocarcinoma, which is a cancer of the bile duct. The bile duct carries a fluid, bile, thathelp with digesting fats in food. It’s a cancer that progresses quickly and very difficult to treat.

Most times, doctors are not able to diagnose it until it had already spread and in the later stagesof the cancer. In March 2017, she took herself to the doctor after experiencing jaundice, dark urine and abdominal pain. These are symptoms of this cancer, however the doctors diagnosed it as mere jaundice. After a couple of weeks and things weren’t getting better, she finally went to the emergency room and she was flown to Oahu. In Oahu, they did many tests and she was finally diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in April 2017.

Her first set of procedures included getting an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ECRP) to obtain a biopsy sample, getting two biliary drains to keep the flow of bile out of her system, and her gallbladder was removed because it was affected by her cancer. She also went through radiation therapy and chemotherapy but the doctors discontinued it because there was no progress in her condition. She was in and out of the hospital on Maui and on Oahu because of infections and ascite buildup.

Her cancer progressed throughout the year, but she stayed strong and was able to travel to the Philippines to get a second opinion from the doctors over there at the end of 2017 and early 2018. When she came back, she was still doing okay. She was able to walk and eat.

In March 2018, she went back to the hospital for ascite buildup and that’s when the doctors finally suggested we have her in hospice care. They couldn’t do anything about her cancer anymore. It had spread too much already. In the last three weeks of her battle, she grew weaker. She lost her appetite, was catching her breath and had trouble walking.

We were always hopeful that she was going to get better because she was a strong lady. She was hardworking and sacrificed a lot to support her family. It was a lost that we expected but we didn’t know it was going to happen so soon. Her wish before she passed was to be brought back to the Philippines and live her last days there. However, God took her before she can. God has ended her suffering and we believe she is in a better place now. We made this Go Fund Me page to raise money to bring her back home as well as bring the whole family home to celebrate her life together. Any form of donation will help.

May God bring you peace and happiness. Mahalo nui loa!
