Help My Family Survive and Rebuild Their Lives After Losing My Father in Gaza

Dear Friends and Kind Hearts,

I'm Dr Nahed Ahmed, a Palestinian Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, currently based in the United Kingdom. Today, I reach out with a plea rooted in hope and urgency, not only for help, but for human solidarity and compassion, as I seek your support to bring safety to my family in Gaza, a region devastated by ongoing conflict and humanitarian catastrophe.

Imagine a home that once echoed with laughter and love, now reduced to rubble and devastation. This is the painful reality facing my mother, my younger sister Mai, and my three adopted children, Ahmed, Rahaf, and Nirmeen. The safety and warmth of our family home have been taken from them, leaving them struggling each day to survive amid destruction, scarcity, and fear — without a secure shelter, and with limited access to food, clean water, and even the most basic healthcare.

We had a safe home here and memories.

My father's health continued to deteriorate due to kidney failure, while Gaza’s healthcare system had completely collapsed. With no hospitals, no proper treatment, and no possibility of medical evacuation, he was left without the care that could have saved his life.

I lost my father without being able to see him one last time, say goodbye, or hold him in my arms for a final embrace. The pain of losing him from afar, helpless and unable to reach him, is something words can never fully describe.

His loss has left a deep wound in our family, while my mother, sister, and children continue to struggle to survive under unbearable conditions of war, displacement, fear, and uncertainty.

My sister Mai, a dedicated chemistry and mathematics teacher, has profoundly influenced many students in Gaza. Teaching is her calling, aimed at empowering the next generation. She pursued her master's degree with great passion, focusing her dissertation on the "Physical, chemical, and microbial analysis of bottled drinking water", a crucial issue in regions lacking clean water. Unfortunately, the conflict destroyed the Al-Aqsa University of Gaza, where she was shaping her future, erasing the laboratories and learning spaces essential to her research and aspirations.

Ahmed, an exceptionally promising and determined student, had begun his undergraduate studies in information technology at Al-Aqsa University. His profound interest in computer science and mathematics went beyond academics; he was exploring the depths of the digital world. Tragically, the ongoing conflict has demolished his university, putting a sudden and unfair stop to his educational progress and dreams.

Nirmeen, a source of inspiration in our family, has faced unique challenges with remarkable resilience. Her school, much more than a mere building, was a haven of acceptance and growth for her, transcending her mental and health challenges. Its destruction is a profound loss, shattering her safe space and halting her personal development. This tragedy underscores the severe impact of conflict on young, innocent lives like Nirmeen's, caught in situations they cannot control.

The impact of your support

In these harrowing times, my capacity to support them financially from abroad is stretched thin. They urgently need $6,000 each just to traverse the Rafah border crossing, a passage to safety and a chance to rebuild their lives away from the chaos that has besieged them, a threshold to a new beginning.

This fundraising campaign is crucial for helping my family leave Gaza and rebuild our lives. As the main provider and a postdoctoral researcher living abroad, I face overwhelming financial and emotional challenges in trying to support and protect them. Your donations represent more than financial assistance; they symbolise solidarity and offer hope to my family amidst conflict. منزل عائلتي الذي كان يومًا مليئًا بالحياة والدفء، تحول الآن إلى ركام وخراب. هذا هو الواقع القاسي الذي تعيشه اليوم والدتي، وأختي الصغرى مي، وأطفالي الثلاثة بالتبني: أحمد، رهف، ونرمين. بعد أن فقدوا منزلهم وكل شعور بالأمان والاستقرار، أصبحوا يواجهون يوميًا معاناة البقاء على قيد الحياة وسط الدمار، في ظل نقص الغذاء والماء والرعاية الصحية، دون مأوى حقيقي يحميهم أو مكان آمن يلجؤون إليه.

لقد كان لنا هنا بيت آمن، وذكريات

تدهورت صحة والدي باستمرار بسبب الفشل الكلوي، في حين انهار نظام الرعاية الصحية في غزة تمامًا. فمع انعدام المستشفيات والعلاج المناسب، وانعدام إمكانية الإجلاء الطبي، تُرك دون الرعاية التي كان من الممكن أن تنقذ حياته.

فقدت والدي دون أن أتمكن من رؤيته للمرة الأخيرة، أو توديعه، أو احتضانه عناقًا أخيرًا. إن ألم فقدانه من بعيد، وأنا عاجز عن الوصول إليه، ألمٌ لا يمكن للكلمات أن تصفه.

أختي مي، معلمة متميزة في الكيمياء والرياضيات، أثرت بشكل كبير في حياة العديد من طلاب المرحلة الثانوية في غزة. كانت قد بدأت رحلتها في دراسة الماجستير بشغف كبير، مركزة في رسالتها على دراسة وبحث “التحليل الفيزيائي والكيميائي والميكروبي لمياه الشرب المعبأة”، وهي قضية حيوية في المناطق التي تعاني من نقص المياه النظيفة. لكن للأسف الصراع الدائر الان أدى إلى تدمير جامعة الاقصى في غزة، محطمًا أحلام مي ومستقبلها المهني.

أحمد، الطالب المتميز والمثابر، بدأ دراسته في تكنولوجيا المعلومات بجامعة الأقصى. كان شغفه بعلوم الحاسوب والرياضيات يتجاوز الحدود الأكاديمية، ولكن النزاع دمر جامعته وأوقف رحلته التعليمية، فقد تحطم كل شئ دون سابق انذار وتحطم معه أحلام أحمد في استكشاف اعماق العالم الرقمي.

نرمين، مصدر الإلهام في عائلتي و التي تتحدى تحدياتها العقلية والصحية بشجاعة، فقدت مدرستها، المكان الذي كانت تجد فيه الدعم والتقبل والنمو، والذي أصبح الآن مجرد ركام. تسلط هذه المأساة الضوء على التأثير الخطير للصراع على حياة الأبرياء مثل نيرمين، العالقين في مواقف لا يمكنهم السيطرة عليها.

في هذه اللحظات الصعبة، تبدو قدرتي على دعم عائلتي ماديا من الخارج محدودة للغاية. إنهم بحاجة ماسة إلى 6000 دولار لكل واحد منهم لعبور معبر رفح، ممر الأمان والبداية الجديدة.

هذه الحملة التمويلية أساسية لمساعدة عائلتي على الخروج من غزة وبدء حياة جديدة خارج غزة. كمعيلة رئيسية لعائلتي وباحثة ما بعد الدكتوراه في الخارج، أواجه تحديات مالية ونفسية هائلة في محاولتي لدعمهم وحمايتهم. تمثل تبرعاتكم أكثر من مجرد دعم مالي؛ إنها تعبير عن التضامن وتقديم الأمل لعائلتي في خضم النزاع. نقدر عاليا أي جهد تقدمونه، سواء كان ماليًا أو من خلال مشاركة قصتنا مع رفاقكم ومعارفكم.
