As anyone who knows us knows.....my sister Gina was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in February of 2017. Since that fight began, we often have quoted good old Dory....”Just Keep Swimming”. It’s all you can do. Press on. Keep paddling, walking, crawling, or even just breathing if that’s all you can manage. But never give up......not ever.
So on Christmas Day this year, we got news that Gina’s daughter Hazel, who just turned 4 on 12/14, was taken to the ER and diagnosed with ALL, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
More cancer. More chemo. More Dory. We will need even more of Dory’s encouragement as this feels exactly as you might expect.....ridiculously unfair and overwhelmingly heartbreaking.
What we have learned from experience however, is that there is light in the darkness and always, always something to be thankful for. We are thankful this is a very treatable cancer. We are thankful for the excellent care Hazel is getting in Vermont. We are thankful they are surrounded by the Bahrenburg family in Vermont and when they return to California, they will be surrounded by the Barlogio family. And all of you. Wherever they are, YOU all have been there. I have received countless messages, posts, texts, emails, etc. Once again, our whole family is so in awe of the love, prayers, and support pouring out on us. I know Gina and Nate feel the same and are eternally, unspeakably grateful.
The next 2 years will consist of many trips to Valley Children’s, treatment, in home care/help for Hazel, and all that goes along with caring for not one but two family members with cancer. Many have asked where to send donations or what they can give to help. This fund will be used for anything and everything that will make this road a little easier to travel for the Bahrenburg family and all who are taking care of our little Hazel Basil. ❤️❤️ We have complete faith that God made Hazel as feisty as she is “for such a time as this”. These Bahrenburg warriors are my heroes.
