Dear Family and Friends,
As many of you know, early in December, my brother Kevin had his first screening colonoscopy. Unlike the vast majority of these routine tests, the doctor discovered a mass, resulting in surgery to remove almost a foot of his colon. The mass was cancer, but we were relieved to learn that the cancer had not spread. “Just in time”, we thought: “The best possible outcome!” Unfortunately, after being released from the hospital, Kevin just wasn’t getting better.
The day after Christmas, Kevin agreed to go to the ER, weak and severely dehydrated. He was admitted, and after four days of testing, he underwent emergency surgery to remove three feet of his small intestine that had died. To this day, neither the surgeon nor any of Kevin's other doctors could explain why this happened. He now has an ileostomy (bag) that will eventually be reversed once he is healthy enough.
Those of you who know and love Kevin know that he is a fighter and he will prevail. Unfortunately, this has become a much greater battle than any of us expected. After an additional hospital stay and several visits to Urgent Care and the ER, it has become clear that my brother is unable to absorb nutrients from the food he eats. Kevin is at home with TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition: intravenous nutrition, currently 14 hours per day). Since starting TPN, his weight is increasing, and labs are getting better, which will eventually allow him to have the third surgery. We have no idea of when this will happen, and whether he will have additional complications.
Kevin owns his own lawn maintenance business, and his wife Shelley works retail. Fortunately, they have medical insurance, but since this nightmare has now spanned two years his “out of pocket maximum" reset on Jan 1, 2016. Kevin has been unable to work at all since early December, and Shelley has to take time off from work intermittently during this ordeal to take care of Kevin.
It was difficult to get Kevin and Shelley to agree to let me set up this GoFundMe account. They are both extremely hard-working and proud individuals who are always more likely to give than receive. During their 36 years together, they have never needed financial assistance. Any money they receive from this campaign will go toward medical bills, and living expenses during this difficult time.
I cannot thank you enough for all the love and support you have provided Kevin and Shelley!
Sincerely,
Lori Lott (aka “Kevin’s Little Sister)
