Hi, my name is Mekhi, I’m an 18 year old trans man living in Ireland. I’ve been socially transitioning since I was 14 and started hormones almost a year ago today! Despite the not so great healthcare system for trans people in Ireland, I’ve overcame it to get the lifesaving healthcare I’ve needed. From starting testosterone to now finally getting a consultation for top surgery in February and it’s thankfully in the country, but on my own, I’m not able to afford it and have been searching for other options such as applying for loans but with no income and a full time student I don’t fit the criteria. I need help which is why I’m here. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in my transition and definitely feel incredible compared to when I hadn’t/wasn’t ready to come out but I know that nothing will compare to the day I’m able to finally see myself as what I’ve always truly been and the only thing stopping me is the amount of money I would need. Although options abroad are much cheaper, I am not able to actually do it as I’d have no one by my side for the 2 weeks that I’d have to reside in the country for healing. I have a consultation with a clinic up in Dublin next month and have saved as much as I can but have had to dip into savings for an Irish gender dysphoria diagnosis and surgery referral as I’ve been involved with GenderGP in the uk since starting hormones and the clinic needs Irish documents to confirm my dysphoria and referral for surgery and to try get these as fast as possible before my consultation I’ve had to go private which currently is €395 for each appointment.
