Hello All,
I'm Zakiya Moore, a senior at Skyline High School in my hometown of Oakland, CA. I recently accepted an offer of admission to Howard University and will be the first in my family to attend college, majoring in International Business in the Fall 2015.
As a writer, dancer and musician, I plan to use these passions to drive me to important goals in life. In addition, I will use my experiences across an array of unique leadership opportunities I've had throughout high school, including acting as the president of Skyline's Black Student Union and playing tenor saxophone as part of the Oakland EastSide All-Star Ensemble---an award-winning jazz ensemble and pre-professional music fellowship.
Despite the financial difficulties I've encountered over the past few years, I continue to overcome struggles of not having quite enough money when it is needed, sometimes foregoing basic necessities. Through hardship I've come to realize that with hard work, effort and initiative, my possibilities are limitless and those principles have gotten me to the single most significant stepping stone of my life thus far---a college education.
My family does not have the means by which to support my endeavor toward college and I need $1500 to jump start my path to Howard -- this price includes my enrollment fee to secure my place at this institution, my housing fees and deposit, my transportation to Washington, D.C., and necessary start-up money. I would need at least $300 by May 9th to ensure that my place is secured for Howard. Unfortunately at this time, my grandparents, whom I live with at this time, depend on government aid to support our household, which inhibits their full support on this endeavor.
I plan to raise the money for my enrollment fee, housing fee, and plane ticket as well as other crucial expenses in the Fall, supplemented by working at Converse and/or Flavor Brigade this upcoming summer and participating in the GirlFly Project, a pivotal program and opportunity for the arts and activism which awards a stipend of the amount of $500 at the end of July.
Whatever support you can give, monetary and otherwise, even distributing the link to this fundraiser across your networks, is heavily needed and appreciated. I'm at once hopeful and grateful. Thank you for your consideration.
