My husband Daniel and I have been together for 46 years, married for 11. I am 80, he is 69. Our only income comes from Social Security and my small pension from UC Berkeley. We have nothing in savings.

We urgently need to raise $5000 as soon as possible. Our Acorn Stairlift maintenance agreement ($1200) renews next month. We got the stairlift after I broke my back and my neck in two separate falls. I could no longer negotiate stairs and needed a way to access our third-floor walk-up rent-controlled apartment where we have lived for thirty-five years. If the stairlift should stop working for some reason, I would be stranded here.

Daniel used to take our laundry to a wash-and-fold around the corner; he can no longer do that. Since we rarely go out, we hand wash what we need when we do. We would like to hire someone to do our laundry, or subscribe to a service like Rinse.com. Either option is very expensive.

My glasses got stepped on and broken after a fall; the lenses are OK but the frames are toast. I’m using an old pair but the prescription sucks. Daniel and I are both due for eye exams and new glasses, but we can’t afford them.

I’m facing one of the trials of old age. I must wear protective underwear which must be changed 2-3 times a day. Not cheap.

We have been fortunate to have Meals on Wheels deliver two meals a day at no charge. But thanks to Donald Trump, MoW funding has been cut. We now get only one meal a day. So we’ve had to start shopping for groceries--on-line and for delivery.

We also have to pay nearly $500 a month towards a loan we got to pay off our credit cards.

And as you can see from our picture, we haven’t had haircuts in a year…

We have set a GoFundMe goal of $5000 which should cover these expenses and more as they come up. They say you should have at least three months of money set aside for emergencies; we’re lucky if we can set aside enough for three days. We are doing our best to control spending, but the cost of living in San Francisco is among the highest in the nation.
