DAVID Kwang-Young HONG
(March 21, 1968-May 2, 2020)
Last Christmas we discovered a devastating diagnosis of our older brother, David Hong, with stage 4 esophageal cancer. He started with chemotherapy and recently had radiation therapy as well. In the midst of his cancer treatments, he experienced several setbacks and complications. With much prayer from friends, relatives and many pastors, he overcame each hurdle. He fought fiercely for 4 months. His faith in Jesus Christ never wavered, never complained about his pain and suffering, and never doubted God's plan. Last Saturday night, Dave went to be with the LORD, very abruptly and quickly. We did not see this coming, as he was feeling better this week, and prepping himself for another round of chemo next week. The loss during this very difficult time of COVID-19 is beyond words, as it came as a shock to all of us, without our last words with him...
Dave was a great son--he was dedicated to his family and served our father, who has been battling with stage 3 lung cancer since last summer. All the while he himself was suffering, without knowing that he also had a tumor growing inside him. He always adored our mother, and welcomed our parents at his home anytime. Dave was a great husband--he loved his wife Clara and was so good to her. He was a great father--he instructed his children in the ways of the LORD, and especially enjoyed spending quality time with his boys during the quarantine time before leaving. To Tom and Hannah, Dave was a great brother--wise, even tempered and with his quirky sense of humor, he would always try to trump them with his vast knowledge of trivias and his love of music. An enormous supporter of Tom and Hannah's musical performances--it was him who spurred them on to be the musicians they are today. Dave was a great son of GOD, serving God's children by teaching Sunday school at Yuong Sang Presbyterian Church. Dave was a great teacher--he taught math to many young people at Accel Academy, as well as private tutoring, who are now professionals in all areas.
The last 10 years he worked with our father as a jeweler at our family business, and only recently took over the business when Dad retired and was diagnosed with cancer. He did his best, but as his treatments took a toll on his body, he had to close the shop occasionally, but as soon as he was up to it, he would return right back to work (regardless of pain). What an incredible determination to provide for his family! When the quarantine took place, we took it as a blessing in disguise for him to just stay home and focus on getting the rest needed during his treatment. This was such a relief for him, as he was so worried about the business and providing financially for his family. After close to 40 years of family business, we will need to close shop now. We did not anticipate Dave to leave us so soon as his hope was to get better to continue the family business.
The financial need is great--business related costs, medical bills and long-term provision for his family. Tom and Hannah assured Dave that his family will be taken care of--the LORD will absolutely provide. We humbly ask for support, namely in prayer and/or financial assistance. We would also appreciate your personal words--any memories you have with Dave, aka BIG DAVE (Big Brother to Hannah, aka OBBA)
Dave is no longer suffering, no more pain, no more worries--he is with our Great Physician who has healed him--he is indeed CANCER FREE, basking in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are confident in this truth and take comfort. Please join us in prayer for our dear nephews, especially the little one (11 year old Jacob) that they will grow in faith, and never doubt God, or be mad at God for taking their father away. This was our brother's last wish for the boys.
Oh, we LOVED DAVE so much and already MISS HIM. Thanks to all the hundreds of people that prayed for his healing. Dave wanted to thank each of you individually, and even asked to be on the email list. He always told me to tell them "God Bless everyone who prays for me". Thank you for your faithful friendship! God has really blessed the Hong family as we continue to live our American dream in Philadelphia, with meaningful friendships that have lasted for decades!
