Casey and Zach's liver transplant adventure
Casey, 57, started not feeling well a couple months ago.
The doctor changed his blood pressure medicine several times, causing his feet and stomach to swell, among other symptoms.
In mid-June his heart started racing.
His wife, Jackie, called their daughter-in-law, a nurse, who came over, saw him and told him he needed to go to the ER. Upon arrival he became very sick, started throwing up blood, and was admitted to the hospital.
Casey spent the next eight days in the hospital, having every test you can imagine - MRI, CT scan, ultrasound scope procedure - and a blood transfusion. After isolating the liver as the major cause for concern, his doctors could not figure out why his liver was so damaged, yet he was so healthy otherwise.
They ultimately diagnosed Casey with a rare genetic disorder called Alpha 1 Antitrypsin, coming from both his parents’ lines. This disorder targets the liver and the lungs, necessitating abdominal fluid drainage weekly, as the liver is not able to function as needed.
The doctors have determined his only chance for survival is a liver transplant.
Casey has an appointment to consult a Seattle surgeon the first week of August.
Their three boys are testing for compatibility as donors.
Once a donor is identified, the family will be heading to Seattle.
Casey’s recovery time will be up to six months after the procedure.
It is unclear what costs to his donors will be covered by insurance.
Your prayers are greatly appreciated during this time, as is any financial help you are able to share.
Thank you so much ❤️
