Canada for Nepal Earthquake Relief

A massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on Saturday. My hometown of Kathmandu has been severely damaged and turned into rubble. The Nepal earthquake was 16 time stronger than the 2010 earthquake in Haiti that killed over 220,000.
News coming out has been quite scarce and we have not been able to get in touch with many friends and family. Some of our extended family and friends are still unaccounted for or outright missing. From what we know, the death toll so far is over 3,700 and rising - with many more injured and still missing. The many aftershocks have been strong (two of them registered at 6.6 magnitude) and continuous (one of my uncles has counted over 70 so far). A tent city has sprung up, and right about now, millions of people there are about to start their third night outside in open areas for safety (in spite of the monsoon rains). We have heard that hospitals are overwhelmed, power is out, and people are having a very hard time finding shelter, food and clean water.
For an already economically impoverished country and people with very little to begin with, this is a huge step back. Nepal is country of rough terrain and many remote villages and towns. Roads have been destroyed by rockslides and entire villages may have been outright buried under rocks or wiped out. We have almost no news from any of the rural towns/villages. It is very disheartening news indeed and the images and stories are heart wrenching. All of this is compounded by the fact that Nepal is a landlocked mountainous country and there is only one international airport with one runway. Getting assistance there will be a challenge.
